Carnivorousness

If you come in my cage I'll eat you too!

In an interview on NPR, the skeptical environmentalist Bjorn Lomborg

said that the polar bears need never become extinct because we could "feed them" should they ever actually began to die out from starvation.

To do so, in his estimation, would be far more cost effective than bankrupting developed nations and redistributing vast amounts of monies to developing nations, who will do God knows what with it all.

He thinks that we should concentrate on helping developing nations develop infrastructure that will help them weather natural disasters and the like so that global warming will not really affect them all that much.

I agree with him.

Well, according to Science Dailey, the future may not be quite so dire for the polar bear.

"Professor J. Scott Armstrong of the Wharton School says, “To list a species that is currently in good health as an endangered species requires valid forecasts that its population would decline to levels that threaten its viability. In fact, the polar bear populations have been increasing rapidly in recent decades due to hunting restrictions."

What is NPR all in a tither about? That their habitat is shrinking? That has not been shown to be the case, unless you want to cite AL Gore as your source, and I wouldn't recommend that course of action. Even if the arctic sea ice were decreasing, it wouldn't mean polar bears would starve. They do not eat sea ice. They eat seals and wlarus calves, but they are scavangers and will not turn their nose up at dead whales or dead adult walrus. They also will eat reindeer.

But not sea ice.

Uh, nichols you're an idiot. They don't eat sea ice but they live on sea ice. There's not land at the north pole, it's ice. No ice and the bears drown. I am in favor of feeding the polar bears though. Feed them global warming skeptics.

Equally concernng is the disappearing penguin habitat. They used to live on the massive ice flows at the bottom of the world. Those poor birds are suffering terribly, and hundreds of them have been spotted swimming the frigid waters of the antartic. I shed a bitter tear.

Let us start a program where we fly in large quantities of bird seed to protect them from the environmental disaster we are all responsible for.

It all reminds me of the Walrus and the carpenter from Alice in Wonderland.

"'O Oysters, come and walk with us!"'
The Walrus did beseech.
'A pleasant walk, a pleasant talk,
Along the briny beach.'"

It's not all as concerning as one might be lead to believe, Gary.

Not to rain on the parade, but if the concern is that the habitat is decreasing, why is the recommended course of action to feed the bears? If the concern is the bears will drown (afterall, some bears have been seen swimming miles from shore), then why would the answer be to give them food? If a man is starving to death do you provide him a warm bed to sleep in?

The only thing feeding the bears will result in will be to make one more population of the land dependent on government largesse. The independence and glory of the polar bear will be lost, and all you will have left is a group of very unhappy bears living a very unnatural life.

Yes she is. She lives near me but some some reason she hasn't slept with me.

Yes, that's right, let's reason with thieves.

Gary, when a babe pops up on your radar screen, she's usually aware of the fact. You may have been a tad too goal oriented.

Consider being more subtle in your approach. Perhaps you could ask to take her out to dinner. Inquire as to how she is feeling. Take an interest in what she is saying. You know, give the impression of...broader interests.

Not that I have any insight into the matter. Who knows how a woman works? Not I, certainly.

OK, got it: fake an iterest in what she says and how she's feeling. I'll keep that in mind.

Sure. Just keep in mind that this is a pretty sharp cat. You're going to have to bring your "A" game.

The polar bear and the wolf are are powerful symbols for environmentalists. They have only to show films of polar bears looking lean to get adherants for their religious cult. The fact is, polar bears will not die out. We have too many means at our disposal to prevent it.

Gary, oh conspiracy theorist, it is strange to me that you can not see the one true major conspiracy being perpetrated by the global warming conspirers aginst the common man. They want to control the common man's movements, whilst they fly around the world, living large.
